During the first week of October, we had the honor of having our VP of Business Development, Dr. Alfonso Chacón-Rodríguez, participate as IEEE-CAS Industry Distinguished Lecturer at the “CANELOS: CAD and Nanoelectronics Seminar” at Canelos 2024, in Valparaíso, Chile, organized by the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (USM) and AC3E, and under the auspices of the Circuits and Systems Society, the Solid State Circuits Society and the Electron Device Society of IEEE.
There, Dr. Chacón-Rodríguez presented his talk “Towards an IC design ecosystem in Latin America: What do we need to open an ASIC design house in the region?”. The talk started the discussion on the opportunity that is opening up for Latin America in the design of integrated circuits, as a consequence of the US Chips Act and the efforts from other countries such as Brazil, Mexico and the European Union, as the lack of new designers in microelectronics is beginning to have a severe impact on the whole semiconductor supply chain. Participants discussed potential models that can foster cooperation in developing more talent in the region, and how to integrate commercial efforts from all interested parties in Latin America.
Later, a forum was held together with researchers and entrepreneurs from Chile, Mexico, Brazil, Belgium and Germany. Representatives present at the seminar included researchers from INAOE in Mexico, the RISC-V consortium, the AC3E academia-industry liaison center in Chile, the Catholic University of Louvain and the Leibniz Institute for High Performance Microelectronics in Germany.
